Europe
Turkey eSIM picks
Turkey has strong 4G/5G coverage on Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom. Travel eSIMs work cleanly, but the country isn't in the EU roam-like-at-home zone — verify any "Europe" plan explicitly includes Turkey before buying.
At a glance
- Best for a 1-week Istanbul trip: Nomad or Saily Turkey plans
- Best for nomads basing in Istanbul or Antalya: Dracotel
- Best for unlimited Cappadocia photography: Holafly Turkey
- Best for multi-country trips touching Greece + Turkey: Airalo regional — but check Turkey is included on the SKU
Network notes
Turkcell has the widest coverage including remote Cappadocia, the Black Sea coast and the southeast. Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom are strong in cities. 5G coverage is expanding rapidly in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Bursa.
Practical connectivity tips
- Install before landing. Istanbul airport (IST) Wi-Fi works but registration is clunky. BiTaksi and Uber both want active data immediately.
- Apps you’ll want online: BiTaksi (default ride app), Uber, İBB CepTrafik (Istanbul transit), Google Translate (camera mode for menus), Google Maps, Trabzon/Cappadocia balloon operator WhatsApp lines.
- Cappadocia hot-air balloon mornings: signal is fine but cold. Bring a battery pack — phone batteries die fast in pre-dawn 0°C.
- Long-distance buses (Otobüs): Wi-Fi is offered but flaky. eSIM hotspot is more reliable for laptop work on overnight routes.
Watch out for
- EU “Eurolink” plans rarely include Turkey by default. Check before you buy.
- Turkish government temporarily blocks some apps (Discord, certain WhatsApp features have been blocked at various points). A VPN — or Saily’s built-in protections — is sometimes necessary.
- Banking SMS to foreign numbers is unreliable. Have an authenticator app set up before you fly.
- Phone registration law: Turkey requires foreign-purchased phones to be registered with authorities after 120 days of use; this applies to physical SIMs, not eSIMs, but is worth knowing for long stays.
