Portugal eSIM picks

Portugal is one of the easiest destinations for eSIMs in Europe. MEO, Vodafone Portugal and NOS all have strong 4G/5G coverage, and the country is included in any "Eurolink"-style regional plan. For digital nomads in Lisbon, Porto or Madeira, this is set-and-forget territory.

At a glance

  • Best for nomads basing in Lisbon or Porto: Dracotel
  • Best for a Portugal-only short trip: Saily or Nomad
  • Best for Iberia (Portugal + Spain): Airalo Eurolink or Iberia SKUs
  • Best for unlimited streaming: Holafly Portugal

Network notes

MEO has the widest coverage including the Algarve, interior Alentejo and Azores/Madeira. Vodafone Portugal is competitive in cities and has the fastest urban 5G. NOS is a strong third. Whichever your eSIM partners with will be fine in tourist areas.

Practical connectivity tips

  • Install before landing. Lisbon airport Wi-Fi is OK but Uber/Bolt want active data on first launch.
  • Apps you’ll want online: Bolt and Uber (both work in Lisbon, Porto and Algarve), Google Maps, Citymapper Lisbon, Comboios de Portugal app for trains.
  • Co-working and cafe culture: Lisbon and Porto have outstanding cafe Wi-Fi, but it’s almost always capped or slow. An eSIM with hotspot is the productivity win for nomads.
  • Madeira and the Azores: MEO has the best island coverage. Mountain hikes will drop signal — Pico Ruivo, Pico do Areeiro, etc.

Watch out for

  • A “Europe” regional plan usually covers Portugal, but always verify the specific SKU’s country list.
  • Algarve cliffs and Costa Vicentina: signal is fine on roads but drops on beach hikes.
  • Some short-term-rental Wi-Fi in old Lisbon buildings is genuinely bad. Your eSIM is often faster.
