Network notes

Spark has the deepest rural coverage including the West Coast, Fiordland and remote South Island. One NZ is close behind and dominates in cities. 2degrees is competitive in the North Island but weaker in the deep south. For trips that include Milford Sound, Stewart Island, Hokitika or the deep Catlins, prefer Spark.

Practical connectivity tips

• Install before landing. Auckland and Christchurch airports have decent Wi-Fi but rideshare apps want immediate data.
• Apps you’ll want online: Uber (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch), AT Mobile or AT HOP (Auckland transit), MetroInfo (Christchurch), DoC Hut Bookings, AllTrails, MetService weather and avalanche advisories.
• Driving the South Island: signal drops in mountain passes (Lewis, Arthur’s, Haast). Download offline maps and any audio.
• Great Walks (Milford, Routeburn, Kepler, Tongariro): essentially no signal once you’re on the trail. Send your itinerary to someone before you start.

Watch out for

• “Outback”-style remoteness exists in NZ too — particularly the West Coast, Fiordland and Catlins. Spark is your best bet there.
• Speed-limit enforcement and adventure-activity weather alerts rely on having data. Connectivity is part of safety here.
• eSIMs that resell 2degrees can have gaps on the South Island main divide; double-check before a tramping trip.
