Australia eSIM picks
Australia's three carriers — Telstra, Optus and Vodafone — have very different coverage maps. Telstra dominates the outback and regional areas by a huge margin. For city-only trips, anything works; for road trips and national parks, the partner carrier matters a lot.
At a glance
- Best for road trips and national parks: Telstra-backed eSIMs (often Airalo)
- Best value for city trips: Nomad Australia plans
- Best for unlimited use: Holafly Australia
- Best for nomads moving between AU/NZ: Dracotel
Network notes
Telstra’s coverage map dwarfs Optus and Vodafone outside the eastern seaboard. For Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and tourist hubs (Gold Coast, Cairns) anything works fine. The moment you head into the Outback, Top End, or remote WA, nothing but Telstra reliably connects.
Practical connectivity tips
- Install before landing. Sydney and Melbourne airport Wi-Fi is OK but rideshare apps want active data on first launch.
- Apps you’ll want online: Uber, DiDi (cheaper alternative), Google Maps offline regions for the Outback, BOM Weather (or Weatherzone) for bushfire/flood alerts, ParkPay/PayStay for parking.
- Driving the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania, or any inland: cellular drops repeatedly. Download offline maps and music.
- Bushfire and flood alerts: subscribe to BOM and state emergency apps. They use cellular notifications — having data matters.
Watch out for
- “Outback” really does mean no signal. Even on major routes between state capitals, expect 100+ km stretches with nothing.
- Tasmania’s west coast has minimal coverage outside towns.
- Inflight Wi-Fi on Qantas/Virgin internal flights is OK on major routes but flaky on regional aircraft.
- Roaming voice on travel eSIMs is unavailable; use WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls.
